Post-Treatment Precautions for Eye Surgery
- To prevent infection, please refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking for 4 weeks.
- To reduce the risk of bleeding, avoid painkillers such as aspirin (Tylenol/acetaminophen is acceptable), vitamin E, and hormonal medications such as oral contraceptives for at least 1 week after surgery.
- Swelling is usually most severe during the first 2 days after surgery, then gradually subsides over 2–4 weeks (this may vary by individual). Try to remain in a seated position as much as possible, and use a high pillow when sleeping.
- To help reduce swelling, apply cold compresses after surgery. Do not place ice packs directly on the skin, as this may cause frostbite—wrap the ice pack in thin gauze before use.
- Sutures will be removed as follows:
- Non-incisional (buried) method: 3 days
- Incisional method: 5 days
- Epicanthoplasty/Lateral canthoplasty: 7 days
- Face washing is allowed approximately 2 days after suture removal.
- Before suture removal, apply ophthalmic ointment regularly to keep the wound from drying out.
