Post-Treatment Precautions for Eye Surgery

  1. To prevent infection, please refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking for 4 weeks.
  2. To reduce the risk of bleeding, avoid painkillers such as aspirin (Tylenol/acetaminophen is acceptable), vitamin E, and hormonal medications such as oral contraceptives for at least 1 week after surgery.
  3. Swelling is usually most severe during the first 2 days after surgery, then gradually subsides over 2–4 weeks (this may vary by individual). Try to remain in a seated position as much as possible, and use a high pillow when sleeping.
  4. To help reduce swelling, apply cold compresses after surgery. Do not place ice packs directly on the skin, as this may cause frostbite—wrap the ice pack in thin gauze before use.
  5. Sutures will be removed as follows:
    • Non-incisional (buried) method: 3 days
    • Incisional method: 5 days
    • Epicanthoplasty/Lateral canthoplasty: 7 days
  6. Face washing is allowed approximately 2 days after suture removal.
  7. Before suture removal, apply ophthalmic ointment regularly to keep the wound from drying out.
