Fertility and General Health Checkup in Korea

Why Get a Fertility and General Health Checkup?

A fertility and general heath checkup is a common procedure for couples in Korea who are planning to get married. Often called a ‘Pre-Wedding Checkup’ in Korea, it is performed to check the couple’s general health and fertility levels before they move forward into married life and consider having children.

To ensure healthy married life, as well as the health of your future child, it is important to look into the factors that may affect pregnancy and childbirth in advance. If you are pursuing this test for fertility purposes, it is recommended to receive a fertility and general health checkup 3 to 6 months before your wedding.

Fertility and General Health Checkup: What We Check For

Hypothyroidism

Due to hypothyroidism, there is an increased risk of conditions such as pregnancy-induced hypertension, placental abruption, cardiac dysfunction, and low birth weight. However, if detected before pregnancy, these complications can be adequately prevented.

Diabetes

Pregnancy complications caused by diabetes include preeclampsia, preterm birth, stillbirth, and fetal malformations. Additionally, the mortality and morbidity rates of newborns also increase.

Obesity

Obesity can lead to complications such as fetal neural tube defects, kidney abnormalities, congenital malformations, diabetes, gestational diabetes, and fetal growth restriction.

Do young women also need regular checkups?

Yes. Women in their 20s or older who are sexually active should have a basic gynecological checkup at least once a year.

At SH Clinic, women can receive gynecological exams tailored to their age and individual needs—from adolescence to post-menopause. Comprehensive examinations by age group are also available.

Importance of taking folic acid before and after pregnancy

If taken before pregnancy and up to 12 weeks after pregnancy, it can prevent neural tube defects such as anencephaly and spinal meningocele by approximately 72%.

Taking folic acid is effective in preventing neural tube defects in the fetus.

Women who have previously had a baby with a neural tube defect are recommended to take 4000mcg of folic acid.

In 1992, the U.S. health authorities recommended that women planning to become pregnant take 400 mcg of folic acid daily.

Recently, as the optimal age for marriage has been delayed, problems such as birth defects, premature birth, and infertility due to pregnancy at an older age may occur, and the demand for pre-wedding checkups is also increasing as a consideration for spouses.

There are cases where previously unknown diseases are discovered through a wedding checkup, and it is best to receive treatment 3-6 months before the wedding to allow time for treatment.
